Gamifying the Future

Engaging Youth in Sustainable Development through EmpowerSDGs

The current global situation, characterised by slow economic growth, social inequalities and environmental degradation, poses unprecedented challenges. The EU is fully committed to achieving the goals set out in the 2030 Agenda, as detailed in the document “Towards a Europe for 2030”.

Moreover, young people are increasingly expressing their desire to play a more active role in social and political affairs in Europe, as evidenced by movements such as Greta Thunberg’s Climate Change Initiative in 2019. Despite these positive steps, there is still much to be done and it’s important to inform and involve young people in these goals.

The EmpowerSDGs project was developed not only to address these goals, but also to provide young people, especially young minorities, with a broad knowledge of global challenges and the 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) through the use of video games and gamification techniques. In this way, they can be well informed about the SDGs and become active citizens who can help with many different aspects of sustainable development.

That’s why the project has clear objectives such as starting conversations, improving knowledge and skills, encouraging debates through gamification and using games as educational tools for fun learning to make things even more interesting and effective for the target group. In order to achieve these goals, the involvement of youth workers working with vulnerable/minority/marginalised youth, educational institutions and the private sector is essential.
